George Assan is from the Kalkadoon Tribe whose country is based around Mt. Isa, Qld. He grew up in Mt. Isa with the Kalkadoon and Doomagee people. His Aboriginal Artwork has been sold to buyers throughout the world. He is meticulous in his work, recalling the stories passed down to him from the elders of the tribes that he heralds from, as well as those of the people he comes in contact with.

George moved to Katherine in 1982 and became involved with the Jawyon and Wardaman people, learning about their country and listening to their stories. George translates the stories told to him by his people in Queensland and from around Katherine.

George’s Aboriginal Artwork encompasses a number of styles, as can be seen in his painting “Gecko”, this is a beautiful depiction of the landscape of Western Australia bordered by two geckos done in the traditional dot painting style.

For the uninitiated, this Echidna painting is based from an old monster in Greek mythology. Called “Mother Of All Monsters”, the Echidna is indeed the monster that spawned the birth of all monsters in Greek myths, which perhaps explains the respect the Jaywon people has for it. Echidnas are often implied jokingly by many as the Royal Flush of the poker that is the Greek mythology mainly for its dominance over other popular monsters. Modern day echidnas (spiny anteaters) are named from this monster because of their striking resemblance.

Wesley was born in Katherine on 19/2/68. He is from the Jawyon tribe whose land takes in Nitmiluk Gorge, and the communities of Beswick, Bulman and Barunga amongst others. He learnt the craft of an Aboriginal Artist from established artists such as Paddy Fordham, as well as utilizing his natural instincts.

He went to school at the Barunga Community School. Wesley has 3 sisters and 2 brothers, is married but has no children, at present he lives in the Werrenbun community near Katherine in the Northern Territory. The subjects of his Aboriginal Art are Echidna, Kangaroo, Fish and Water Moniter.

Wesley’s Aboriginal Artwork has been sold Internationally, as well as at exhibitions held in Sydney, Australia. His mediums are canvas and Bark (Rarrk) as well as Didgeridoos.
